Her speech
Jul 25th, 2024 at 11:35pm

Federal abortion law, universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, universal health care, child care, paid parental leave.

This one's got every Democratic policy left on the spike, a true antithesis to her opponent.

It's just a pity she can't shut her crowd/applause-track up. Forget the Dems, Karmala's going to have to take all this to middle America.

Sure she's overly emotional, sure she talks like a kindergarten teacher, but she's got the policies America wants. If she can learn to talk straight (and turn off the applaud signs), she may take this one home.

Of course she's not going to get gun reform and universal health care, but it's the thought that counts. Pure hyperbolic fantasy. And yet, she's proposing the exact opposite to you-know-who, a genuine choice between two American visions.

I think it's a smart move.

You?

Bill Shorten spent $620K of taxpayers money on a speechwriter.

I wonder how much these democRat speechwriters cost US taxpayers.

Biden could have brought in federal abortion law if he didn't need to take afternoon naps.

They already have background checks assault weapon ban is unconstitutional what part of shall not be infringed does she fail to comprehend?

Is she talking about taxpayer funded child care who pays for this parental leave?

The rusted on democRats will vote for her anyway leftists support their side like a soccer hooligan supports their team.

Oh, dearie, dearie, me, Baron, Biden wasn't the only one to take afternoon naps,  Reagan did as well.  He's remembered as a "great president", despite being a senile old fool.  Run along, Baron, stop being so foolish.  Tsk, tsk, tsk...  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

They're all popular policies with majority voter support. Abortion polls around 80%, gun control close to 70%. The assault weapon ban was federal law for over a decade. Karmala's proposing taxpayer-funded childcare and employer-funded parental leave like every other OECD country has.

Americans continue to live in the dark ages and they're over it. Perhaps the biggest wealth disparity in the developed world.

This is how Trump came to power. For some reason, working Americans thought he'd stand up for them. All Karmala has to do is state the obvious. Hillary wouldn't do it, Sleepy Joe preferred actions to words.

If Karmala runs on popular policies with a levelling theme, she can win. Tell it like it is. Trump offered big oil the chance to write his energy policy for a billion in cash. He said he'd overturn the Constitution to get vengeance on his political enemies. Project 2025 is waiting in the wings - explain that, lay it out.

Americans don't want to become Russia. They want the kind of sane, fair country we have, with the same social welfare policies, health care and opportunities. Trump's promised to place pre-existing conditions back into health insurance policies. He wants to scrap the department of education. He wants to place the military into cities to fight the homeless - all laid out in Agenda 47.

Stop cackling, Karmala. Just tell it like it is. The Democrats have won the popular vote for nearly two decades. Trump has the highest unpopularity rating of any politician in history. Play it right, Karmala, and you could win this in a landslide.

thi is how I see it.
the overt clapping/cheering is an american thing. They have an extrinsic culture.
That speech could have been 6 minutes and coherent.

She does offer a genuine choice
Someone well educated, progressive, a lawyer who is in her 50's

Someone who is a felon, regressive and generates rage in his late 70's.

Yes.

Who can imagine Americans delivering Americanism without a 'mardi gras'?

During one of my work shifts, I was almost fired for taking an afternoon nap. If a president can get away with taking an afternoon nap to power on through the rest of the day, I think that is alright for us white and blue-collar workers.

Actually, it's Americans delivering democracy. The point of that presentation - the gushing, staged applause - was to show the base is on board.

The point of her speech is to save democracy from the hands of a tyrant. That's the very essence of Americanism. The founding fathers, the red, white and blue, the cheesy pageantry of it all, is about how America had a revolution to become a democratic republic.

American patriotism is inextricable from democracy. You can't have one without the other.

Karmala needs to highlight the project of her opponent: an insurrectionist campaigning on a promise to seek political vengeance and overturn the Constitution. Not only is it a complete reversal of the American revolution and republic, it's unAmerican. It goes against everything Americans find honourable about themselves.

Biden doesn't "bring in" laws, dear. This job sits with Mike Johnson, fundamentalist Christian and devout anti-abortionist.

Mike, you'll recall, wasn't even willing to discuss laws to fix the border, under orders from his Dear Leader. Why do you think he'd "bring in" legislation written by Biden to overturn Dobbs?

Good speech.

I know it's the early honeymoon period, but she's doing extremely well - you can tell that by how triggered Frank and Trump are.

She's got them worried.  Very worried.

Sure, there'll be gaffes along the way, but she's off to a very good start.

Stick to the policies, keep reminding the world that Trump is a rapist & convicted felon, and encourage everyone to actually get off the *couch and go out to vote.  She can do it.

*There's an interesting story about Vance and a couch.
