Their competitors routinely are so juiced up on the latest performance-enhancing drugs that are, of the day, undetectable, they could light their own farts and just fly to the finish line. East German athletes were once also the Olympian uber junkies.

The US is headed for its lowest Olympic gold medal tally for about 6 decades. This is despite the US's fomenting the ban of Russia from the Olympics.

Americans have been taking drugs, probably even more so than any other country. They have the scientific means to stay ahead of drug detection technology.

I cite the example of Lance Armstrong who competed using drugs for more than a decade assisted by coaches and other US sporting officials.
