This is a big deal. It was a law trump got through that threw womens rights back 60 years.
A backbone of hardcore 'conservative christians' intolerance has been broken.

Nonsense.

"the US Supreme Court handed the power to legislate abortion back to the states"

The SCOTUS decision was not "a law that Trump got through".  It was the reversal of the earlier SCOTUS decision (R vW). SCOTUS does NOT make laws, it only arbitrates on the constitutionality of laws.

It was a decision ANY black letter-majority, non-activist court would have made: abortion law is for each state to make in a federation, it is not for the central government to override the states. This is also the case in Australia: abortion is regulated by the states.

Trumps role was, as president, to appoint black letter judges rather than activist judges.

Donald Trump took credit Wednesday for the elimination of Roe v. Wade, embracing his role in selecting the Supreme Court justices who were instrumental in ending the half-century precedent that protected abortion rights nationwide.

“After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone,” Trump, the former president and front-runner for the 2024 Republican nomination, said on his social media platform.

Everyone knows he's taking credit for this because he's said so and also because he's taking credit for altering the make-up of the Supreme Court, which made this decision. It couldn't have happened without Trump stacking the court with conservative Justices. I think it's wrong - the Supreme Court should be balanced, not skewed toward one end of the political spectrum.

I don't get how he describes 50 years of failure. What failure? Women had every right to take care of their own reproductive health themselves until Trump came along. Now we have some states even considering enacting legislation that would make it illegal to leave that state to go to another in order to have an abortion. That's just wrong.

Change the State laws then.

The point is:who makes the applicable laws. In a federation, it is the states. That is the case in Australia, and now in the US.

As for balance- who is the acceptable, unbiased arbiter of that?

What would be the point of right of centre head of government acting as if he were left of centre??
( An uncomfortable question to the last 5 UK PMs as well as to Turnbull and ScoMo here)
