Illegal immigrants in the US actually commit less crime than born citizens. They fear the punishment for their crime, but ALSO deportation (and automatic refusal of an entry permit)

Without further research, I expect the same applies to illegal immigrants to Australia. It's logical: illegal immigrants have more to fear if they break the law.
