Protesters gather ahead of march on weapons expo in Melbourne

Protesters and police hit the streets even as dawn broke in Melbourne ahead of an expected 25,000-strong march on a weapons expo in the city.
The city's hosting of the Land Forces Defence Expo has seen people marching in the street since Saturday, with extra police resources diverted.
Officers have even been brought in from New South Wales.

Today, on the first day of the expo, authorities are expecting up to 25,000 anti-war protesters to converge on the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
It's expected to be the city's largest protest in decades.
Nearly 1800 police are expected to be deployed to meet them, equipped with special search and arrest powers.

Yesterday, state treasurer Tim Pallas said the cost of the week-long police operation would be about $15 million.
And Premier Jacinta Allan said there was "no room" for "disruptive" behaviour.
The expo was organised before Israel's invasion of Gaza after the October 7 Hamas attacks last year, but the war appears a major factor in the protests, with many attendees waving Palestinian flags.

"We want Australia to not be complicit because it is actually against international law to be supplying weapons to Israel," protest organiser Nathalie Farah said.
Greens MP Gabrielle de Vietri also announced she would attend the protest today, saying the convention should "have never been happening in the first place".
Police and protesters are expected to be on the scene from about 6am.

There have been many arrests.

Why does Melbourne need an arms expo?

I don't understand how it's lawful for a cop to
spray a chemical weapon into the eyes of a member of the public
who is just standing there doing nothing bad.

I mean if you did that to a cop you would be up on serious charges of assault
with a chemical weapon.

A lot to consider here.

Who would be so absolutely stupid to believe they could have a “land warfare convention “ in Melbourne with tensions in the community already running so high?

In fact it’s that stupid it can’t just be sheer incompetence.

No one is that dumb and arrogant!

It’s obviously been set up knowing full well the protesters would come in thousands.

What are seeking to gain? Are they using products against the demonstrators in a show and sell sales pitch?

How much money and police time is being wasted?
Should not the organisation running it be billed?

Who is attending?

It’s just such a poor read I can only imagine it’s full of out of touch politicians inside ?

“What does Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust do? Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is owned by the State Government of Victoria and generates its revenue from the provision of convention and exhibition facilities.”

I doubt after the police action, ambulance bill and hospital costs the Victoria government is making any money on this event.

Jacinta Marie Allan Position is now untenable, she must resign before the unrest spreads.
