More proof (as if any were needed) that background checks are necessary before anyone is allowed to buy a gun and/or ammunition in the United States. That this guy had a history of mental illness and was legally able to purchase this weapon and ammunition and almost murder a presidential candidate says all that needs to be said that is wrong with gun laws in America. You can't even buy body armour here in Australia, much less an AK-47.

I saw a video of Obama at a town hall meeting in the last few months of his presidency where he answered a question from a pro-gun person. He said he’d just been in a meeting with the FBI where they informed him of a number of ISIL sympathisers and he said he can put them on a no-fly list but because of the NRA and Republicans, he can’t stop them from going and legally buying a gun at a gun shop. This guy had a history of mental illness and weapons crimes and yet was still able to legally buy and own a gun. It’s just absolutely ridiculous.

The alleged perp is said to have been "known" to the FBI, and, even more bizarrely, was favourably profiled in The New York Times last year for his efforts to organise a grand convergence of the Pentagon's wars without end by recruiting Afghans to fight in Ukraine. Curious.

On the other hand, if you're searching for patterns among the chaos, this seems as good as any:

This mini-spate of lone shooters is beginning to feel a bit like the 2024 version of Russian interference: they're getting us used to the idea of Trump being an assassination target, so that the ultimate "October surprise" won't seem such a big deal.
