Up until now, both individuals have been staunch Trump supporters with mental health issues. Influenced by Trump's rhetoric, they internalised the notion that exercising their Second Amendment rights was a legitimate response to a so-called tyrannical government. Ironically, they now perceive Trump himself as embodying that very tyranny.

And what has been the Republican response, year after year, in the wake of every mass shooting?

"It's not a gun problem, it's a mental health problem."

Yet what actions have they taken, both during Trump’s tenure and since?

They have consistently voted against expanding access to mental health services.

What, then, have they expanded?

Access to firearms.

Now, we are faced with former Trump supporters, struggling with mental health issues, who have been repeatedly told by their political leaders that they possess an inherent right to bear arms in defence against tyranny.

They now find themselves with greater access to guns, but no support for their mental health struggles.

Disillusioned by Trump's presidency, they feel compelled to exercise the Second Amendment rights that have been so vigorously promoted to them, only now, it is Trump who they perceive as the tyrant.

Those who support this rhetoric cannot claim to be innocent victims. Much like Trump in his numerous legal battles, he and the Republican Party are facing the consequences of their own actions.

It is deeply troubling that such incidents have become normalised, much like the tragedy of school shootings.

Yet, perhaps, as with the justifications for spreading misinformation about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, this too is the price to pay for finally drawing media attention to the problem.
