No, this was not an assassination attempt in the strictest sense, though it certainly could have been, had intervention not occurred. While the distinctions are crucial to note, one must question how much they truly matter in the grander scheme.

Attempted assassination includes preparing for one, not just firing and missing.

Who said he was preparing to assassinate ... anyone?

Has he confessed to this?

Has he been charged with that?

All we have at the moment is a guy with a gun within 300mtrs of the rapist.

In many states of the US the rapist would be within 300mtrs of a guy with a gun almost 24 hours a day.

Lots of Americans carry guns, in case you haven't noticed.

And they continue to do so thanks to the rapist.

If the prosecution can present evidence before a judge at a hearing that indicates Routh was there to assassinate Trump and not, say, to shoot pigeons or for any other reason, he'll also be charged with attempted assassination.

You can only wonder how many probable assassination attempts there are per year in the US... And how many are disrupted by the Secret Service or the FBI... Maybe dozens.

If they get to the would-be assassins early, long before they've hunkered down at the kill site, they've likely already got them on charges that bring in 30 to 50 years of Federal prison time, such that raising the national temperature, by making an argument for charging them with attempted assassination, isn't necessary.
