I guess I won't be working in disability support. But, I guess that there is a possibility to work placement at a lifeline centre or somewhere nearby. Salvation Army or somewhere nearby.
You haven't said what you're enrolled in (and that's OK) but whatever it is, it will help you to do voluntary work. It could be credits so you can go straight from qualification to paid work. Or it could just be experience.
Back when I was hard unemployed (ie on benefits) I tried to get work at nursing homes and a disabled children's home (I know, but I had good intentions.) They didn't want me because (a) I had no qualifications, but (b) they didn't think I'd last a week.
Working with the elderly, or with disabled people of any age, is actually really hard. The clients aren't going to be nice to you, in fact they can be very bitchy. They basically have you over a barrel, and they'll do dumb stuff like spilling their meal on the floor, just to watch you clean it up.
Other staff can be pretty bitchy too. I'm guessing it helps to have sex with the other staff, but that never seemed like an option. Most junior staff, are expected to make the first move. If it's even a chance, I would suggest you try that.
