Emirates confirmed in a statement: "Emirates is cancelling all regular flights to/from Iraq (Basra and Baghdad), Iran (Tehran), and Jordan (Amman) on 4th and 5th October due to regional unrest. Customers transiting through Dubai with final destinations in Iraq, Iran, and Jordan will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin until further notice.

The British Foreign Office advises against all travel to Iraq, apart from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), where it advises against all but essential travel. It also advises against all travel to Iran and says: "British and British-Iranian dual nationals are at significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention. Having a British passport or connections to the UK can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you."

Apparently Iranians have a bizarre obsession with the British... eclipsing even their obsession with the US.

They tend to believe the British are covertly running the world... that even US presidents take their orders from British PMs.

Likely a hangover from the deposing of Mossadegh.

The problem is, if you had a television set in an Iranian home (which most of the Iranians do), they tend to believe that the Americans are the underlings of the British.

Interesting that the US is attempting to dissuade Israel from bombing Iranian nuclear and/or missile infrastructure.

The US likely fears this would cause a status loss of the Mullahs among Iranians and the region, triggering regime collapse.

There are sizeable number of Persians who want return of monarchy to Iran, some of them are still in Iran.
Unfortunately some of them have connection to old SAVAK, which, in the eyes of Western libs, was as bad as IRG. However they never stopped struggle against theocratic dictators.

The younger generation are mostly atheist they hate the Islamic regime.

They say SAVAK was right with hardline attitude towards Mullahs.

Iran cancelled all flights in and out of Iranian airports very early this morning Australian time due to the risk of Israeli strikes against the country. Flights will not resume until Monday morning their time.

I feel they are premature with their decision.

I highly doubt (but could be wrong) Israel will retaliate on 7 October. I don't think it would go down well with the Israeli public who will be more focused on the memorial services and would not want to face a tit for tat from Iran.

However, Yom Kippur is on the 11th of October, so I reckon the retaliation will happen between 8 - 10 October, likely the 8th or 9th though.

Given that military installations are usually the most acceptable of legitimate targets, why else would the US not want Israel to target them in Iran other than the fear of regime collapse?

How fragile and unstable is the Islamic Republic regime?

Iran is not an ethnostate.

Their greatest fear is that a general mobilisation of the Iranian people would almost certainly be the last thing the Mullahs do before internal Iranian tensions wipe them from power and rip them apart like Gaddafi.

Iranians hate the Jewish state more than they hate the Mullahs.

No they don't... Persians, after nearly 1000 years of ethnic cleansing, only now constitute 51% of the population.

Islam conquered the last 'Persian' (Sassanian) Empire, in the 7th Century AD .

In 1979:

(google)"Who supported the Iranian Revolution?" (1979)

The revolution had the support of a broad cross-section of society (including Islamists, secularists, nationalists, laborers, and ethnic minorities)....

Admittedly your point about differences in Iran has merit (whether based on different ethnicities or not):

https://www.stimson.org/2023/iranians-differ-widely-with-their-leaders-over-the-...

Iranians Differ Widely with Their Leaders Over the War Between Israel and Hamas
The Iranian government and public opinion has splintered over time, as domestic and foreign policy shift support between Israel and Palestine

However, in the same article:

Abdul-Hamid Esmail-Zehi, the outspoken Sunni Friday prayer leader of Zahedan, which has suffered massive government repression in recent years, wrote that the Iranian people “support peace between Israelis and Palestinians. War only results in human catastrophe. Iranian people support international efforts to broker a peace deal between Israel and Palestine.”

The warmongers on this board ofcourse cheer the ongoing Israeli genocide, rather than  brokering the two state solution, which will need to be imposed on both sides by the UN, because Hamas-Hezbolla, and Netanyahu are all war criminals.

Just as peace with Ukraine will need to be imposed, because Putin, paranoid about NATO on his border, has become a war criminal.

Quote:
Minority ethnicities making up the other 49%, mainly in the north, southeast and southwest of Iran resent Persian domination in their territory.

The Mullahs would be fools to test non-Persian loyalty to them under a general mobilisation.

Even among the Persian (slim) majority, the Mullahs would be double-fools to assume complete loyalty.

Yeh - meanwhile the Hamas-Israeli genocide continues, with Israel losing international support by the day.

Ahead of the year anniversary of the atrocities carried out by Hamas terrorists on October 7, President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, gave a historic interview to Saudi-based international news channel Al Arabiya. The interview was conducted in English with senior news anchor Riz Kahn, and was broadcast in English and dubbed into Arabic on the channel’s outlets.

In the interview, President Herzog made a direct appeal to the people of the Middle East and said: “We are all the children of Abraham, and I call upon the people of Lebanon, the people of Iran, the people of all of the oppressed nations in the region, to rise up and understand that if we move this empire of evil, if we confront it and be tough together, we surely can hope for a better future and create a NATO like structure in the region that blocks radicalism”.

The President spoke of the pain and anguish in Israel as a result of the ongoing terror attacks against its people, and of his hopes for the future of the region. He said, “We are not dealing with revenge and retaliation. We are first dealing with a lot of pain and agony. I can tell you, as the head of state of Israel, I've seen enormous pain and agony that I've never imagined.”

He added, “Clearly, as we see, this war has been waged against us by the empire of evil, by Iran and its proxies. We have 101 hostages still in the dungeons of Gaza, in immense suffering. And we are fighting in the north and in the south, meaning in Gaza and in Lebanon, we are trying to change the equation and bring hope for the people of the Middle East.” He stressed, “It's a golden opportunity for the powers that want to have a better future for the Middle East to move forward with new ideas and new plans in order to resolve this conflict and exit from the war. But I'm not sure our enemies are there.”

Asked about international criticism of Israel, the President said, “As part of the entire war machine against us, we are attacked in the international legal forums, attacked in public opinion, attacked on campuses and so forth. But we truly believe in our vision, we are a democracy. We are an oasis in the Middle East. We have we have Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze and Circassians living and dwelling together. Unfortunately, yesterday, Hezbollah has attacked with missiles against Muslim towns and cities, our brothers and sisters.”

The President clarified, “We follow the examples of international humanitarian law. And I want to say something, I care for our neighbors. I care, I deeply care. We care, we care for the pain of our neighbors, but we have the right to defend ourselves, and when we are defending ourselves, we are defending ourselves from missiles in people's homes, in people's shops, in people's mosques, in people's playgrounds or schools. It's unbelievably annoying when you see this in Gaza or in southern Lebanon or throughout Lebanon. It's unacceptable. People who believe in peace and freedom in the region and the world need to stand up and say this is unacceptable.”

Asked about Israel’s potential response to the massive Iranian missile attack on Israel last week, the President said, “I think we are calculating all calculations in this respect. But one has to understand the Iranians. Iran is the only country in the world who calls for the eradication of another member state of the United Nations, that's Israel. And they keep on saying it all the time. I saw the speech of the Supreme Leader. There was no message of accommodation or extending a hand, or saying, let's move together, two great historic nations to help change the life of people in the Middle East. Rather, you see Iran spending billions of dollars of their own citizens money on a huge war machine aimed to create pain havoc. So either we offer hope for hope, or we go for destruction. Iran offers destruction. We are offering hope.”

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/other/tehran-threatens-to-strike-us-oil-rich-alli...

"Tehran has secretly threatened to strike America's oil-rich allies in the Middle East if their territory or airspace is used for an Israeli attack on Iran, it has emerged. Israeli officials are pushing for damaging strikes on nuclear facilities or oil infrastructure after Tehran fired 180 ballistic missiles at Israel earlier this month. But Iran has now warned that it will respond with 'devastating hits' on Israel's civilian infrastructure and against any Arab states that helped facilitate the attacks, The Wall Street Journal reported."

Will the Islamic Republic of Iran succeed in acquiring its nuclear bomb? Will Western countries succeed in preventing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's regime from achieving this? For around fifteen years, clandestine networks have been active in helping to manufacture the Iranian bomb. In Pakistan or Switzerland, they have organized channels to deliver the necessary equipment. In the United States or in Israel, the secret services try by all means to hinder its production: infiltrated informants, assassinations of scientists, sabotage of nuclear sites (...), they wage a merciless fight against the Mullahs' regime.
This documentary reveals behind the scenes of this shadow war. It’s a geopolitical thriller whose actors have agreed to tell us about the dirty tricks and the feats of arms.
