Should Airbus Albo resign as PM, call an election?
Oct 30th, 2024 at 11:32am

Airbus Albo is done for. What little trust there was has evaporated, especially since his multi-million dollar property purchase on the NSW central coast came to light recently. Talk about tone-deaf! Now this scandal around his acceptance of and requesting of perks from Qantas as Transport Minister. You can't accept/request upgrades and other perks from Qantas CEO Alan Joyce while serving the Rudd-Gillard government as Minister for Transport without doing fatal damage to your integrity (if he ever had any). It's as simple as that. He really is a moron (as is anyone who comes to his defence) if he can't see the absolute wrong in what he has done and is attempting to defend. Should he resign? Should he go to the Governor-General and call an early election and let people decide? I think yes on both counts.

He should refer himself and assist in the inquiry.

His position is tainted otherwise.

If his done nothing wrong he has nothing to hide.

Unfortunately after reading this-

“In short:
The National Anti-Corruption Commission will reconsider whether to investigate six people referred to it by the Robodebt royal commission.
An investigation found the NACC commissioner should have removed himself entirely from decision-making after declaring he knew one of the people, but failed to do so.”
“Abc
I’m concerned our NACC is corrupt!

Albanese declared his travel like all other MP's who have accepted upgrades....There is no allegations Albanese did anything wrong apart from bad optics and confected outrage from right wing pundits....I would accept all politicians who have accepted upgrades from big business to be investigated if the practice is corrupt???

Huh Huh Huh

The issue for mi is if he “ requested” the upgrades rather than them being “ offered “.

Say he was the treasurer and asked the reserve bank for a four million interest free loan.

Would that be ok so long as he declares it?

There's allegations in an upcoming book that Airbus Albo requested upgrades, that he wasn't only offered them, while he was Minister for Transport. Nothing confected about being outraged by that. It also calls into question his close relationship to Alan Joyce and his governments' decision while he is Prime Minister not to grant additional access to Qantas rival Qatar Airways to Australia with additional flights. While he has declared his upgrades, he has so far refused to answer numerous questions on whether he asked for any of those upgrades while he was Minister of Transport.

The other issue is who tipped off Alan Joyce about the  upcoming airline senate inquiry and allowed him to resign and flee to Ireland before he could be questioned?

Albo?!?

As I said....I would accept all politicians who have accepted upgrades from big business to be investigated if the practice is corrupt....Apparently the practice is not illegal....Why would you not investigate everyone considering the details are scetchy on many of these upgrades....Peter Dutton accepted travel from Gina which he declared but is it okay for Politicians to accept upgrades from big business....Why should any investigation only involve Albanese???

Reply to below, I don’t believe accepting an upgrade is really a issue. I have before.

It’s usually at the whim of aircraft staff  on boarding ( in my case I was a walking wounded following poor wave choice in Tahiti), the difference is I wasn’t minister in charge of transport nor did I ring the CEO of air NZ and request it.

Accepting a upgrade isn’t really a thing. It happens.
Requesting one is!

“Qantas has normalised the acceptance of favours at a time when distrust in politicians is so low. Why didn’t the PM simply avoid the conflict by saying “no, thanks”?”

“ smh

How can he possibly say no thanks if he personally rang the CEO and asked for it?

Don't you think it's different when the Minister for Health accepts an upgrade from Qantas, compared to the Minister for Transport? Granted, he (Airbus Albo) hasn't accepted any upgrades since becoming PM - that we know of - but given his apparently close relationship with Alan Joyce, one can rightly question his governments' decision not to grant Qantas' rival Qatar Airways additional flights access to Australia. Did he get asked to do that by Joyce? Did he do it for Joyce as a favour, or quid pro quo? These are fair questions given Albo's attempts to dodge questions over whether he went further from just accepting upgrades to actually requesting them.

As far as I'm concerned, no MP or Senator should be accepting any preferential treatment from any business. In the case of Qantas and the invitation of MP's and Senators to the Chairmans Lounge upon being elected, I think that should be stopped immediately. It's not a good look when government Ministers are given special treatment by an airline over which one of them may have a portfolio conflict of interest, as is the case with Airbus Albo when he was Minister for Transport and now the Prime Minister with a close relationship with former CEO Alan Joyce.

How do we know the circumstances of other politicians who have accepted or requested upgrades from big business....You see no problem with Peter Dutton accepting free travel from Gina???

I believe no MP or Senator or Minister should be accepting things like that. But, and here's the kicker, the difference is he wasn't a government Minister when he did that.

As far as I'm concerned, no MP or Senator should be accepting any preferential treatment from any business.

Totally agree but think its unrealistic.
Politicians are pigs too a troth and any and every business will feed them-

“Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie has reportedly been banned from using all Qantas services for six months, after abusing staff members at Melbourne Airport in March.

Key points:

Ms Lambie blamed a "long few weeks up in Parliament" for her outburst
She apologised and said she "blew my top at a Qantas worker who didn't deserve it"
Qantas has reportedly banned her for six months
Nine newspapers had reported Senator Lambie reacted badly to being told by airline staff she was unable to access the Chairman's Lounge.

Nine reported that after negotiations with Senator Lambie, the airline suspended her for six months from early April.”

Why does any business give away freebies to politicians?

Is it a bribe?

Has anyone asked them that?
