Come come, Phil, if the big fella thought a male boxer could take out a gold medal in the women's boxing, the women's US boxing team would be full of beefy guys in knickers.
Trump doesn't believe any of that. He doesn't believe anything at all. He had to be coached on how to talk pro-life and Christian. He'd speak in tongues if he thought it would keep him out of jail.
That's what Karmala was up against. While she hummed and ha-ed over the best way to discuss issues that have consequences on real people's lives, Trump just blurted out whatever he was told.
This, as a democracy in an age of disinformation, presents US with an existential conundrum: how to deal with truth.
Plenty of voters don't care about gender-affirming health care policy in federal prisons or understand that US presidents don't have a say over the International Olympic Committee's gender policies. If Karmala tried to explain any of that, she was accused of doing word salads. If she tried to say it wasn't important, she was accused of being mean to trannies.
Tough gig, right?
During the Brexit campaign, plenty of voters didn't understand that the EU doesn't send Arab and African terrorists into member countries. The voters didn't understand the various treaties, policies and agreements, they just heard how awful the EU was and that was that.
Now, UK exports are down 27%. European goods cost 10% more. GDP hovers under 1%, just out of recession. Regulations have gotten
worse - the result of red tape sending things in and out of Europe, showing your passport to go on your holidays, and on and on. The British have always been a bunch of whingers, dear, and now they whinge even more.
Like Brexit, the US election results shows that the politician who tells the most lies wins. The one who obfuscates, tries to get things right and trips over boring policies with a thin veneer of hope, loses.
This is a big problem. Those voters are going to be really unhappy when their new prez gets in, raises tariffs and adds 20% to inflation. Hang on, they'll say, he promised to
lower inflation.
Then they'll see corporate taxes drop, and a huge growing government deficit. Interest rates will be forced up and they'll have to pay more in rent. The corporations will be making hay and rolling in it, and they'll be paying more for everything.
Hang on, they'll say, he promised to
help the little guy.
Then they'll see the foreign wars, the political vengeance, Project 2025 and all the rest, and the scales will fall from their eyes. They'll suddenly remember why they chucked him out the first time.
Oh, I know, we'll say. You can't say we didn't warn you. But do you know?
With the presidency, House, Senate and supreme court, there won't be much anybody can do. With that kind of power, he could probably change the Constitution if he wants. He could stay in power until he dies, just like Vlad. In a couple of years, the voters will find themselves in the same position as their friends the poor, whinging Poms, totally trapped and cheated.
So, I ask you this, how can we turn this problem around?
Thoughts?
