Gaetz withdraws as Trump’s attorney general pick

Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz announced he is withdrawing from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general. Trump praised Gaetz, saying his pick didn’t “want to be a distraction” for his administration.

Gaetz’s decision comes a day after he met with GOP senators on Capitol Hill and as he faced scrutiny over sexual misconduct allegations. Republicans on the House Ethics Committee voted Wednesday not to release the results of their investigation into Gaetz. Sources tell CNN that the committee was told of a second sexual encounter between Gaetz and a 17-year-old at a party in 2017.

Mr Gaetz's decision prevents a messy showdown in the Senate, where his pending confirmation as America's top law officer was under a cloud, despite strong support from the president-elect.

The former Florida congressman had been under investigation for sexual misconduct, and senators wanted to see a report into the allegations before confirming his appointment.

The Justice Department started investigating the Florida congressman in the summer of 2020, and the FBI executed a search warrant on Gaetz later that year, seizing his cellphone and a cellphone belonging to his ex-girlfriend.

The public learned of the existence of the investigation in 2021, when The New York Times reported that prosecutors were investigating whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old in 2019 and paid for her to travel with him, in violation of federal sex-trafficking laws.

The investigation into Gaetz stemmed from a broader Justice Department inquiry into Gaetz's longtime associate, Joel Greenberg. Greenberg pleaded guilty in 2021 to six felony counts of sex trafficking, wire fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and stalking.

Former Trump aide John McEntee testified to the January 6 House Committee that Gaetz had asked for a pardon from Trump regarding a "child trafficking" allegation the Justice Department had investigated.

In related news, the Congress Ethics Committee, which is split along party lines, has voted not to release its report into the investigation of allegations made against him. All that was needed was for just one Republican to, you know, act in an ethical way, for the report to be made public but instead the Republican members chose to protect him instead. I hope the report gets leaked anyway. Must be incredibly damaging to Gaetz if the Republicans are protecting him, given what we already know publicly about his puerile behaviour.
