How the hell can anyone stop themselves from being poisoned?

You buy a drink and you never know if someone has added metho to it.

You could just only drink cups of tea.

South East Asia has always been a dangerous place. Why travel agents are not more vigorous in warning young travelers about the dangers there puzzles me

Geez even tea can be poisoned…
What needs to happen for someone to be safe… if buying bottled or canned drinks and opening it yourself! And hang onto drink in hand…

There are a number of ways to test for methanol in alcohol, including:

Iodoform reaction
A chemical test that involves adding iodine and sodium hydroxide solutions to ethanol and methanol, then observing the test tubes after two minutes
Gas chromatography
A rapid and accurate method that can analyze samples with color or complex components
Handheld detector
A device that can detect small amounts of methanol in beverages and display the results on a smartphone
Flame test
Methanol gives off a light white flame when burned, while ethanol gives off a bright blue flame

Nothing is wrong with a cup of tea either.

Totally agree… it’s been dodgy forever and travel warnings about drinks being spiked should be a constant warning …

My daughter… I could’ve lost her too…. She’s nearly 41 now, but at age 22 went to Malaysia with friends…
And it ended up a nightmare. Her drink was spiked and she passed out.
I did warn her time and time again about being careful about drinks.
Lucky she had friends with her … all she recalls is waking up, vomiting, passing out, waking up, vomiting again, passing out, waking up and being aggressive she couldn’t control.
It was hard for the friends but lucky they stuck by her.
For that I am eternally grateful.
When she came home I said for her to go to doctor for tests … all they did was a urine test and found nothing… why on earth didn’t they do a blood test?!
I was fuming. I’m upsetting myself again  Embarrassed

Are any test kits available to consumers?

Digital Hand-held Pocket Refractometer (Methyl Alcohol) - IC-PAL-36S

It is pricy for near $600, there are cheaper Chinese devices too but I would not trust the quality.

Now I see everywhere advice saying don’t drink spirits.

This is the crap they put in drinks.

Only if you distil.

Distilling concentrates the alcohols, up to 99% in a home still.

yes, it is not mandatory to drink spirits or even alcohol.

In the distillation process methanol and ethanol are both extracted. Only at slightly different temperatures.
Methanol kills, ethanol is what makes people drunk (it's still a poison) .
it takes just a small mistake to capture and bottle the methanol instead of the ethanol.

You wouldn't need a fancy meter which can give accurate levels, just test strips to show if methanol is present at a dangerous level.

Good commercial opportunity to make affordable strips that can detect both methanol and formaldehyde.
