A diet for Fido

Don’t give your dog canned food—it smells disgusting and makes your dog’s poop smell even more strongly and unpleasantly than it does normally. It is also mostly gelatin shaped and colored like meat. YUCK!

Don’t give your dog kibble! Firstly, kibble is full of filler, mostly rice, of ZERO nutritional value. Bulk feeding of dogs with kibble has reduced canine life expectancy HEAPS!

The other thing is: domestic (not actual working dogs) dogs do NOT need to be fed 100% protein. Dogs are not wolves who have to bring down a  big animal to eat as well as maintain territories and maybe fight neighboring packs etc—very high energy lifestyle unlike couch potato domestic dog in a city. BTW—wolves get their vitamins not from eating veges in the stomach of prey but from eating organ meat—kidney, liver, thyroid etc of their prey. You may need to include these in a 100% meat diet for your working dogs.

I feed Socks pet mince in the morning—raw, straight from the packet. I keep a “sausage” of dog food in the freezer in case I run out of mince and can’t buy more. But I prefer to give her the raw mince which is rather more expensive. How much—depends on the size of the dog, activity and energy level etc.

Her dinner is half a 500g bag of frozen veg—NOT containing corn, LOL!—and a small handful of cheese. I spread a little stock powder and also a pinch of a “health booster” on top of the veges and cheese.

Socks is runner up Coursing hound in Tassie for 2024, did a superfast run that earned spontaneous applause on Saturday—obviously, her diet gives her all the energy and health she needs.

A word about damn cats. These need a 100% meat (meat and fish, whatever) diet or so I read—pure carnivore. Anybody know?

A good supplement is 4cyte, I buy the tubs for horses because it is the same as for dogs but much cheaper. 4cyte is for joints and helps prevent and control arthritis. I start my dogs on this after year 1 coupled with fish oil capsules.

Feed is fresh veggies very lightly boiled with lean mince and occasional sardines. Breakfast is applaws grain free biscuits.

I prefer raw meat to processed food like kibble or biscuits.

Where do you get the 4cyte?

Arthritis is why I give the bitch sardines at the end of each month (an easy way of knowing when to give her the sardines.)

She gets bones when I locate beef bones.

The vet shed online

We get the 4Cyte Equine 700gm  which lasts about a year for two labs. Cost is $250.

The 4cyte is like little balls and we give about 8-12 of those in our dogs dinner.
