We in Australia are squeamish about slavery - even the crypto kind, having no recorded history of it... not so in the US, whose citizens are more than comfortable with it due to their history... so long as it's euphemised as 'migrant workers' or 'illegals'.

I have read a lot about the US Civil War.

The things said about slavery by the South! Even after Appomattox and the surrender of JE Johnston to Sherman. Read some of the diaries by Southern women during and after the war.

Contrabands—no policy re slaves reaching Union lines. One Union general, not wanting to return escaped slaves to their owners called them “contraband” of war, like captured cotton or guns etc.

Contrabands they stayed for a long time. Lincoln was strongly antislavery but big on regard for the Constitution, maintaining the union. The problem to the freeing of all the slaves was the “border states.” States like Missouri and Kentucky that had Union supporters who had slaves.

The Emancipation Declaration, finally issued after the battle of Antietam, a sort of victory, freed slaves in areas controlled by the Confederacy but not in areas controlled by the Union!
