The US is so dangerous that it only attracted 70 million tourists last year, that’s nearly twice the UK number, obviously the.terrible gun problem is affecting the numbers, meanwhile Australia had 7.4 million tourists.

So UK with less guns than Oz had five times the tourists.
Not looking good..

Strange, the headline is the opposite of the article's words:

'The U.S. stands as an extreme outlier among high-income countries. The number of children killed by guns is 36.5 times higher, compared to many other high income countries including Austria, Australia, Sweden, England and Wales, according to analysis recently published by the New England Journal of Medicine. In recent years international research has also proven that greater levels of gun ownership are closely associated with higher rates of gun violence.

An audit by the Democratic-leaning policy and research organization the Center for American Progress, of all 50 states, found a close correlation between the states with the toughest gun laws and states with the lowest gun crime rates. Meanwhile, international research has compared national gun laws, rates of firearm ownership and gun violence rates. The results are striking  as the graph above suggests..

Heres what you are allowed to use for self defense in australia. flashlight!

Spot

Notice in Victoria you can't even carry a Swiss army knife on your keyring.
Some of them are only tiny.

https://www.legalaid.vic.gov.au/guns-and-other-weapons#other-weapons

Other weapons
You can’t carry knives, including kitchen knives, Swiss army knives or box-cutters, batons, cattle prods or bayonets without a lawful excuse.

A 'lawful excuse' could include having the weapon for work, sport, recreation or a weapons collection, display or exhibition. Lawful excuse does not include self-defence.

You can only possess or carry some weapons if you do so safely.

You also can’t carry weapons like flick knives, daggers, butterfly knives or knuckle knives, swords, nunchakus, knuckle-dusters, shanghais, blow guns, imitation firearms, capsicum spray, slingshots, weighted or studded gloves, throwing stars or catapults without a special exemption or permission from police.

Penalty?

Up to 1 year in jail.

Just got back from a shopping center this arvo.
There was a Mr Minute shop - the ones that cut keys -
that had Swiss Army knives for sale.

No sign that it was illegal to carry such a knife on your key ring.
Even the smallest ones are illegal.
He had a super tiny one for $69 with only a 4cm blade.
Still illegal and would get you one year in prison.

Did he also sell the imitation car keys that are available as a self defence weapon?
Amazon has lots including the now common folding car key that flicks out into the extended position under spring influence, a small flick knife.
Remember that a car key to the eye can cause permanent blindness and if long enough and delivered with sufficient force may even enter the brain proper and cause death or permanent disability..

Swiss army knives like most other knives are not illegal what is illegal is to carry them without just cause.

A farmer quite often carries a pocket knife, in a sheath on his belt [some belts have a horizontal sheath built into the belt], but he would be well advised to remove the knife before going to town because being in town removes the legitimate reason for having it.

Remember Sheath Knives are banned under the NFA; one presumes that ‘sheath knife’ means a knife with a sheath.

The National Firearms Agreement doesn't mention knives.

You’re right, Bobby, I just read the NFA again; I must have got confused with the NSW laws, I did find that, in that State a sheath knife is one that the sheath retracts into the handle on the press of a button, either spring assisted or by other means.

In NSW it's the 1998 Weapons Prohibition act that outlaws certain knives, nunchakus and slingshots which haven't been used for self defence  since David slew Goliath.

Tactical Pens appear to be legal for how long who knows.

If one draws a little, has a small sketch pad then one can legally carry that very lethal weapon, the needle point hard lead pencil.

Mens’ deodorant sprays are good defensive weapons and can be carried at all times and places.
