Because the Arab world resented the confiscation of half of Palestine.. Lawrence of Arabia had promised the Arabs soveveignty over Palestine, in return for assistance against the Ottoman empire.
But the British reneged on that promise, and eventually they were forced out of Palestine by Jews, and belatedly handed the old Palestine Mandate to the UN.
