Interesting fact.

If you just get a long wire to act as an antenna -
get a metal pole or use a kitchen tap as an Earth or ground.

Connect one antenna wire to one side of a headphone and
the other wire from an Earth to the other side.
Connect a cats whisker diode across it and you'll hear many radio stations coming through.

So you can build a radio out of 2 parts:
headphones and
a diode.

radio communication was very important in the 1930s and 1940s in SEA -
and even if people didn't have direct access to a receiver someone always did -
even if it was only a Xtal set -
and they relayed the messages.
