“Upon arrival the three adults had been taken from the water and police commenced CPR, however, a 40-year-old female and 44-year-old male could not be revived,” police said.  “A second male – aged 42 years – was revived and taken to hospital by St John Ambulance WA.”

Suresh Rajan, an advocate for migrants in WA, told The Australian: “As soon as I saw the story I just knew it would be someone from our community”.

Mr Rajan said he had dealt with the aftermath of several drowning deaths of migrants in WA and it was clear to him that there was widespread lack of understanding about the dangers of beaches and rivers. Mr Rajan said this was especially risky considering that many migrants from South Asia – himself included – either could not swim or were not strong swimmers.

“We need greater awareness and education campaigns to bring these issues to our communities, preferably in language as well,” he said.
