When it comes to drowning prevention strategy, Ms Scarce said it was about breaking down the statistics and working backwards.

"Which particular nationality are drowning? Where are they drowning? What age group is drowning? What gender is drowning?" she asked.

Ms Scarce said a multifaceted, collaborative approach was needed to assist members of the community who were most at risk of drowning, as the problem could not be fixed by one organisation alone.

I read yesterday in social media that children/teenagers can run the mile about 20 seconds slower on average than their parents did in their youth.

I went to a high school in the early 1990s. Our physical education teacher came in from the United States. He was appalled at the lack of effort high school students had with physical education. He implemented a physical education program to lift the teenagers out of their apathy. I arrived at high school in 1992. We definitely pushed to get our physical standards up to what our teachers wanted us to get.

We had an Olympian compete at the 1992 Olympics. He probably used our high school pool for training whenever he could. And we tried to make swimming as part of our high school curriculum as we could.

Some bitch of a police officer pulled me up 15 years ago over some technicality. I challenged the ticket in court. That slender woman that came to my car window to bullshit me had blown out 30kg inside 6 months when she was in court. I bet she had to spend $400 on new pairs of work pants to accommodate her fried chicken-eating arse. Meanwhile, I get fined $300 (including court costs) for doing 12 over the speed limit.

The officer got fired (over something unrelated) and went off to preach her religious nonsense to her derelict friends in the drug industry.

It's always good to tell new Australians that the snakes and spiders here are harmless and jellyfish tickle.

Suresh Rajan, an advocate for migrants in WA, told The Australian: “As soon as I saw the story I just knew it would be someone from our community”.

Mr Rajan said he had dealt with the aftermath of several drowning deaths of migrants in WA and it was clear to him that there was widespread lack of understanding about the dangers of beaches and rivers. Mr Rajan said this was especially risky considering that many migrants from South Asia – himself included – either could not swim or were not strong swimmers.

“We need greater awareness and education campaigns to bring these issues to our communities, preferably in language as well,” he said.
