Victoria soars to 47°C for first time since Black Summer

Anthony Sharwood, Monday December 16, 2024 - 14:26 AEDT

For the first time since the fateful Black Summer, the mercury has reached 47°C in Victoria, as an intense heatwave bakes large parts of eastern Australia including a big chunk of our southernmost mainland state.

Shortly after 2pm, the mercury peaked at 47.1°C at Walpeup, a tiny town in the Mallee region in the state's northwest with a population of around 150.

As of 3pm Monday (AEDT), temps had reached 44°C or higher at several locations in the Mallee and Wimmera districts including Mildura (45.1°C), Hopetoun Airport (45.4°C), Swan Hill (45°C) and Horsham (44°C).

Even Victoria's southern coastline has not been spared today's extreme heat, with Warrnambool reaching 41.2°C just after 1pm before rapidly shedding more than 10 degrees within half an hour as a cooler west-southwesterly change pushed through.

I was whingeing about 35°C the other week. But, I could not imagine the 47°C.

I suffered through hot humid weather the other week until I decided to go see a documentary at the cinema. Best $18 I have spent. Free food after the event.

Hope we get a lot more than 25mm of rainfall tomorrow and Wednesday. Low pressure system hanging off the coast moving northwest.

On Black Saturday in 2009 it reached 46 C degrees at my place.

I went outside with bowls of water to save the birds - that were falling out of the sky.
I saved many of them.

I was doing deliveries the other week in hot afternoon weather. Friday and Saturday night was a matter of a bit of rain about. It was really good monsoonal type weather without the heavy rain.

harden up -  LOL.

It didn't get to 41 where I am -
it peaked at about 39.

The cool change later on at 9.00pm was welcome.

It's around 18 degrees right now -
what a nice refreshing wind after the heat of yesterday.

It will go down to 15 tonight - perfect.

That is really weird weather. We have minimums getting no lower than 20°C by November. After that, it would take a rain event with heavy hail for the temperature at any part of the day to go below 20°C. It takes until April in the following year to see minimum temperatures get below 20°C.

That's why I like the Southern regions of Australia -
I also sleep better when we have cool nights.
