Ban.

From the NFA,
‘’ 6. Jurisdictions will ban the sale, resale, transfer, possession, manufacture and use of those semi-automatic long arms and pump action shotguns included in Licence Category C and D other than in the following exceptional circumstances:
[a]military use
[b]police or other government purposes
[c]occupational categories of licence holders who have been licensed for a specified purpose, including
I extermination of animals
ii.film and theatrical armourers
iii.firearm dealers
iv.firearm manufacturers
v.additional occupational needs and other limited purposes as authorised by legislation or Ministerial discretion
[d]collectors
[e] in the case of Category C shotguns
members of the Australian Clay Target Association or clubs affiliated with the Australian Clay Target Association with a medical need to use a Category C shotgun due to a lack of strength or dexterity, or
ii.
individuals who were on 15 November 1996 registered shooters with the Australian Clay Target Association and who, at that time, possessed a semi-automatic shotgun or pump action repeating shotgun for use in clay target events’’.

‘’Banned’’ except for all the exceptions which means the arms mentioned are not banned but restricted.

Just another example of the sloppiness of the NFA.

Lax wording of Acts by both State and Federal law has led to many a lawyer being able to afford a yacht.

Example, the NSW Traffic Act authorised both STOP and HALT signs, until a solicitor, representing a motorist who didn’t stop at a HALT sign, pointed out that the HALT sign was in German and that his client didn’t know German but he always stopped at STOP signs as they were in English and that was his client’s native language.
Result was that he got his client off and all HALT signs were taken down, never to be seen again.

Pity you don’t read a bit about what the law actually says, then you wouldn’t keep putting your feet in it.
Assault rifles are not banned in the US or in Australia and I defy you to shew where, at law, they are banned.
,

Did you miss it? (from philperth2010):

The ban was allowed to expire in 2004 without being renewed, and assault rifles once again became legal in the United States.

No doubt you are hiding behind another of your self-serving self-defence ideology's 'definitions', while ignoring  the effects of poverty and inequality on the levels of violence in a community.

Didn’t miss it, how could I ?
I read Phil’s Funnies with enjoyment.
I’m not hiding behind definitions I merely stick to definitions instead of flights of fancy.
So I’ll say it again, now listen [or read] carefully, assault rifles have never been banned in either the US or Australia.

In Oz, access to 'assault rifles' (of various types) was  tightened after Port Arthur - that's why the Nationals  hated John Howard so much.

The Nationals didn’t hate Howard for that, they went along with him, Tim Fischer in particular, and that was what got them almost wiped out at the ballot box.

Ah so, as I said: possession of 'assault riffles' of various types was  indeed heavily restricted in Oz, after Port Arthur.

So your "never been banned" assertion is misleading; it's much harder to get them.

It is only possibly misleading to those who are not fully conversant with English or who believe politicians or the MSM.
I said that they were not banned and they were not, not only that but their status never changed, it is not much harder to get them, it is just as hard as it was before Port Arthur.
Fully automatic/burst fire weapons have been severely restricted since well before WWII.

What is misleading is the description of semiautomatic rifles as assault rifles weather it be through ignorance or to seek some political objective.
