Townsville, a new Alice?

Seems that Townsville is getting a crime reputation.
https://mypolice.qld.gov.au/townsville/queensland-crime-statistics/

Crime seems to have doubled since 2000.

And a few more statistics.

That's not doubling.

Does the crime rate merely reflect population growth, or is there something else happening?

No, it’s the rate of crime which is not the same as the number of crimes.
Rate is usually based on per thousand of the population and it has doubled over the period quoted.

The link you gave takes you to the crime numbers. Which have not doubled. You can change it to the rate, which looks like it has gone up 28%. Not double.

Still, something going on, as the rate is dropping in other places.

Sorry about that, I was going on the crime numbers which have almost doubled and, of course the raw numbers are meaningless statistically unless converted to the rate.

Something is certainly going on, I’ve looked at a few other places, and crime rates seem to be moving up in bigger cities.

So many rabbit holes here too spend hours looking into.
Is the increase in crime juvenile?
Domestic violence ( that’s my bet) ?
Or serious murder or attempt murder?

I constantly have people saying the police aren’t doing enough about juvenile crime in my little pocket of Qld.
I simply remind them of “ the latest murder “ ( we seem to be averaging 1 murder every two to three weeks) and suggest the police are very busy trying to solve that rather than stop juveniles from stealing.

Believe it or not our Police can’t be everywhere all of the time.

Obviously they need to work on the serious crimes first and work there way down.

Unfortunately the government doesn’t.
It’s a different discussion.

Crime rate is going down in Brisbane.

So is everything else - down there they even have a brain drain in the criminal classes.  A lot of the downward trends in 'crime rates' are when dopey cops like we used to have far too often are steadily removed from the force and those who are reasonable and not into playing the power game over anyone whenever they felt like it - take over.

You surely can't forget the bad old days of when a copper could just charge someone and get away with anything, do you?  Any lie will do in the best force that money can buy.  Remember the salad days when a drive in the country was likely to net you a speeding fine in a Morris Minor as you passed through or near some sleepy town?   Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin

Of COURSE the crime rates go down when the police don't just willy-nilly charge ordinary people with loading up charges ..... those days and those cops are NEARLY gone, though enclaves of them remain to be dug out and exterminated.... they continue, in some cases, to imagine in this modern day of fast communication, that distance from Police Plaza One will keep them safe from doing wrongful things.

But in the main - in the populated areas - the old 'Trifecta' violence against the people is rare ...

It's hard to be wrong if you don't actually say anything.
