Car smashes into Nando’s over cash refusal

A seemingly fed-up customer rammed a spray-painted car into the side of a Nando’s in Melbourne’s north on Friday morning, suggesting a link to the restaurant’s cashless payment announcement earlier this year.
Emergency services were called to the Nando’s on Barkly St in Footscray about 2.15am Friday after reports a car had driven into the front of a building.
It appears the driver left a message for the restaurant.
Police found an allegedly stolen white Volkswagen abandoned at the scene.
Written on the side of the car in orange spray paint read a message: “We don’t accept cash here”.
It appears the message was aimed at Nando’s, which announced it would only accept card payments in its Australian restaurants in May this year.
The change came to public attention after a Reddit post showed a sign inside a Nando’s store announcing the change.
“We’re card only!” the sign read.
“Sorry, guess we’re part of the New World Order now. Just kidding, card payments mean we spend less time counting coins and more time perfecting your chicken.”
The news divided fans, with some left outraged by the removal of cash payments.
Police have established a crime scene at the fast food venue.
“On arrival no person was present and a stolen white Volkswagen sedan was still on scene,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
“At this stage investigators do not believe entry was gained to the building and the exact circumstances are still to be established.”
