No, I am not a monk.

When I decided to open a home brew shop I needed to find a name. Something wet like “Unley Home Brew & Baking” wouldn’t serve.

Now, in Belgium there are trappist monks who brew delicious beers like Chimay Dubbel, Tripel and even Quadrupel. In Lent these monks fast by only consuming a special heavy ale. I would be pretty jovial after a few weeks of such a diet  Grin Grin Grin Grin

So the Jovial Monk HBS was created. And so was a handle for here and a couple other places.

You make beer, you are alright then.

I can brew beer starting with malted barley, water, hops and yeast—this is known as full mash brewing. Have a look in Critters and Gardens at Christmass Ale. I will brew a batch of this in April—this will be part mash i.e. a small mash supplemented with liquid malt extract (or, if I feel up to it, a second small 3-4Kg mash.)

Full mash brewing is a bit beyond me—age and joint problems. But with fresh liquid malt I can still make some nice beer. One of the aspects of brewing I really like is formulating and calculating a recipe—creative!

I make lemoncello because I grow a lot of citrus fruit, but I'm thinking of making some moonshine from peaches when the local orchard has them.

He became a drunk.

Peach flavor is delicate and won’t survive turning peaches into wine or whatever.
