Russian social media video appears to show Australian man captured in Ukraine

...

By defence correspondent Andrew Greene and political reporter Maani Truu

In short:
A video circulated on social media appears to show an Australian man being questioned by Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

In the footage, the man identifies himself as 32-year-old Oscar Jenkins and says he is a biology teacher from Australia.

What's next?
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the video as concerning and said the Australian embassy in Moscow and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade officials were investigating.

Australian officials have launched an urgent investigation after video emerged on social media of a Melbourne man who appears to have been captured by Russian forces in Ukraine.

The footage shows a man with his hands tied and dirt across his face being hit across the head as an unseen person questions him in Russian.

In response, the man identifies himself as 32-year-old Oscar Jenkins and, speaking in both English and Ukrainian, says he is a biology teacher who lives in Australia and Ukraine.

He was asked about why he was in Kramatorsk — almost 700 kilometres east of Kyiv — and if he was being paid to fight.

The video was first posted by pro-Moscow Russian Telegram channels on Sunday and the ABC has since independently verified Mr Jenkins' identity.

A man in khaki sits with his hands tied.
In the video, Mr Jenkins is asked if he is being paid to fight for Ukraine.  (Telegram)

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday that the video was "concerning" and that the Australian embassy in Moscow and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)were investigating it.

"We are working through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to provide support including for this gentleman, trying to ascertain the details and the facts," he said.

"We know that the Russians often put out information that isn't right, so our embassy in Moscow is working but in addition to that Foreign Affairs and Trade are working here as well."

Russia is executing more and more Ukrainian prisoners of war

Vitaliy Shevchenko

Ukrainian sniper Oleksandr Matsievsky was captured by Russians in the first year of the full-scale invasion. Later, a video emerged showing him smoking his last cigarette in a forest, apparently next to a grave he had been forced to dig.

"Glory to Ukraine!" he says to his captors. Moments later, shots ring out and he falls dead.

His execution is one of many.

In October this year, nine captured Ukrainian soldiers were reportedly shot dead by Russian forces in Kursk region. Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating the case including a photo showing half-naked bodies lying on the ground. This photo was enough for one of the victims, drone operator Ruslan Holubenko, to be identified by his parents.

"I recognised him by his underwear," his distraught mother told local broadcaster Suspilne Chernihiv. "I bought it for him before a trip to the sea. I also knew that his shoulder had been shot through. You could see that in the picture."

The list of executions goes on. Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating reports of beheadings and a sword being used to kill a Ukrainian soldier with his hands tied behind his back.

In another instance, a video showed 16 Ukrainian soldiers apparently being lined up and then mowed down with automatic gunfire after emerging from a woods to surrender.

Some of the executions were filmed by Russian forces themselves, while others were observed by Ukrainian drones hovering above.

The killings captured on such videos usually take place in woods or fields lacking distinctive features, which makes confirming their exact location difficult. BBC Verify, however, has been able to confirm in several cases - such as one beheading - that the victims wear Ukrainian uniforms and that the videos are recent.

Rising numbers
The Ukrainian prosecution service says that at least 147 Ukrainian prisoners of war have been executed by Russian forces since the start of the full-scale invasion, 127 of them this year.

"The upward trend is very clear, very obvious," says Yuri Belousov, the head of the War Department at the Ukrainian Prosecutor-General's Office.

"Executions became systemic from November last year and have continued throughout all of this year. Sadly, their number has been particularly on the rise this summer and autumn. This tells us that they are not isolated cases. They are happening across vast areas and they have clear signs of being part of a policy - there is evidence that instructions to this effect are being issued."

International humanitarian law - particularly the Third Geneva Convention - offers protection to prisoners of war, and executing them is a war crime.

Despite this, Ramzan Kadyrov, the strongman leader of Russia's Chechnya, briefly ordered his commanders involved in the Ukraine war "to take no prisoners".

War Crimes..... Churchill should have made it instantly clear - in response to Hitler's Commando Order - that each and every person involved down to the lowliest , who actually executed Allied soldiers in uniform - would be hunted down and suffer the same fate after a trial to ensure guilt.

Same here.  All involved in shooting uniformed combatants in this way must be hunted down and tried and executed if found guilty.  No questions.

Now you know what will happen to captured Chechnyans... same as happened to the SS when they tortured and executed Airborne and later particularly Canadian prisoners.  Shot on sight.  Even German tank crews - black overalls and a death's head badge - would scream when captured that they were not SS - just tankies.

Hi Grapps,
the Russians are bastards.
They invade someone else's country and execute them for defending themselves.

The Russians need to be wiped out - they are not humans.

Pro-Russian influencer Aussie Cossack offers himself in prisoner exchange with Kremlin

for captured Australian fighter Oscar Jenkins
The Aussie Cossack, a pro-Kremlin influencer holed up in the Russian consulate,
has offered himself for a prisoner exchange with the Australian mercenary captured while fighting for Ukraine.

December 23

...

The controversial pro-Russian influencer Simeon “Aussie Cossack” Boikov has offered himself as part of a potential prisoner exchange deal with Moscow.

The proposal comes after Oscar Jenkins, a 32-year-old former teacher from Melbourne, was captured, beaten and abused while fighting for Ukraine against Russia.

Mr Boikov, an Australian-born Russian supporter and outspoken propagandist, is hoping to broker a prisoner deal between himself and the captured Australian.

Mr Boikov told Skynews.com.au such an exchange would be “uncharted territory” for relations between Australia and Russia.

“We've never had an Australian captured fighting as a mercenary against Russia,” he said on Monday.

“The other Australians that have fought there have been killed and they've never been taken alive.”

The 32-year-old Aussie Cossack revealed he has pleaded with Russia not to torture, harm or kill Mr Jenkins.

“Unfortunately for Oscar, the Russians view him as a mercenary, which means he's not afforded the same type of protections… as a normal prisoner of war,” he said.

“I've had extensive conversations with deputy of the Russian State Duma (and) federal deputy Viktor Vodolatsky.

“And he has said that Russia is going to do everything possible to facilitate this exchange from the point of view of the State Duma.”

Mr Vodolatsky recently confirmed the idea of a “prisoner swap” and said, “We will make every effort to exchange Simeon Boikov for the captured Australian mercenary”.

The Australian government has not responded publicly to Mr Boikov’s proposal but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “We always look after Australians”.

Mr Jenkins is lucky he wasn’t executed as Ukrainian POWs increasingly are.

Ruzzians are pigs.

Mr Jenkins is not a mercenary BTW. Wagner Group, THEY were mercenaries.
