Soloman Islands covered in bombs

I watched this tonight ABC 24 news channel.

Foreign Correspondent Time Bomb - The Pacific

9:29PM - 10:00PM

Quote:

Eighty years since Japan and the Allied forces waged a battle at Guadalcanal,
Solomon Islanders are still paying the price with thousands of unexploded devices
left behind and the threat of leaking oil from rusting warships.

There are bombs everywhere and if you touch them they can go off -
people dead and maimed and no Govt cares
not the Japs - not the Yanks -
they DON'T even supply metal detectors to find them.
The estimate is that there are at least 100,000 bombs left to find and dispose of.
They turn up in people's gardens and on building sites.

Sunken ships containing 1000s of tons of oil are rusting away
and could release it at any time to wreck the environment.
There is no plan to do anything about it - even after 80 years.

The Yanks spend US$850 billion on their military every year but
not one penny for the Solomon Islands to clean up their mess -
same with the dirty Japs.

"This year 2024 has been a record year so far for the removal of explosive remnants from the Second World War in the country.

That’s because more than 5,400 bombs have already been destroyed thanks to the combination of Operation Render Safe and the daily operations of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), Explosive Ordnance Department (EODD). Australia is a proud partner of the RSIPF on this critical work."

Thanks Lee,
the fact is that there are still over 100,000 more to go.
That's an embarrassment after 80 years.
More should have been done long ago.

In mid-2024 a small bomb was found at the Darwin waterfront on a construction site. [1] Another was located in 2022 where a shiplift facility was being built. [2] In 2010, a 250kg bomb was found near Tiger Brennan Drive, with another located there in 2015. [3] They are just the latest in a long series of finds since the end of World War II.
