No, Trump isn’t smart, nor is he a statesman, he’s a salesperson.
Don’t confuse the two, they are fundamentally different.
Trump is a masterful salesman. Even when his contradictions are recorded for all to see, when he changes his message to suit his audience, often outright lying, he’s managed to make the truth irrelevant.
The public has come to expect his dishonesty. It’s not seen as a failing but as part of his brand, encapsulated in “the art of the deal.”
The issue arises when his lies collide with reality. After making conflicting promises to different groups, assuring them of outcomes that cannot coexist, he finds himself incapable of delivering.
Quite literally, he can’t fulfil what he’s sold, it’s impossible.
Yes, he won two presidential elections. But this wasn’t due to intellectual prowess or expertise in domestic or foreign policy. It was the result of his ability to sell a narrative, however detached from reality.
His record as President, particularly after his first term, demonstrates a glaring weakness: execution. He’s adept at making promises but fails to follow through on them.
Yet, his skills as a salesman allow him to distract from these failures. By discrediting his opponents and their parties, he fosters enough distrust that his supporters overlook his broken promises. They continue to believe he can fix the very problems he’s perpetuated, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Trump is, without question, a phenomenal salesman. But he is not a statesman, he is a moron and his Achilles’ heel lies in delivering on the grandiose visions he so skilfully sells.
