Bit of a joke, really - a codger Australian who'd remember it was once funny to tell a joke at the expense of non-Anglo Australians while at the same time not thinking of themselves as Nazis... now a few decades later being non-plussed by someone from a similarly isolated culture using a forbidden gesture in another context.

As for the Roman salute... The Italians are more than a bit miffed that their ancient greeting is deemed taboo by foreign 'decree'... as are Tibetans, and other northern Asians, that their ancient sacred symbol - the swastika - is also deemed taboo by foreign 'decree'.
