But what is more pitiable, is from where to where we have come in 50 to 60 years...

Back then, with nearly all Holocaust survivors still alive, Jewish actors were playing senior-ranking Nazi officers, Jewish comedians were cashing in and making light of Nazis, while a British comedian was adding to the Anglospheric generic vernacular and unifying the Anglosphere, Israelis and Jews the world over with his warning to not mention the war while peppering a monologue with the names of the Nazi High Command.

And no one was calling these actors and entertainers Nazis.

Forward 50 years and people born long after the Holocaust, decades after Hogan's Heroes, and Basil Fawlty, are weeping over even a jocular reference to Nazism.

Who are they weeping for, I wonder.

As a tip towards how condensed with multiple legitimate meanings a human gesture may have, (and with so limited a range of possibilities, no wonder), and Churchill's intent to signal victory notwithstanding, EastEnders decided to interpret the gesture as Up Yours... because they despised him.

And there it is... Many defer to the other's gestural intentionality as a courtesy only if they like the other or believe they could.

Musk is at a disadvantage here as he appears to be generally so unlikeable, and terrifies the effete pearl-clutchers such that, while they may begrudgingly acknowledge Musk's intention, they still want it acknowledged that he gave a Hitler salute... tellingly though, they won't be drawn on why they think the latter is still important...
