I have had experience training government staff, it was eye opening.

We were told no one fails, I said I can't sign off anyone that is not competent, the response was I only sign off to say they have completed the training. I responded by saying the certificate says "certificate of competency" not completion of training. This was the good bit, they said completing the training makes you competent.

I doubt a 'Certificate II in stapling' is hardly comparable with the training given to air traffic controllers.  Cheesy Cheesy

But your experience is in Australia so it doesn't count -

in the USA you could be a bus window licker and still get the job.

Air Traffic Control training is vastly different due to the sheer number of lives at stake. It's hardly the same as a government accountant, where the worst that's likely to happen is a paper cut. To become an air traffic controller, you have to undergo intensive training and at a number of points along the way you are assessed/tested and if you fail, you can no longer continue the training. Your supposed training of government staff is nothing compared to this.

I concede your experience in not passing a training course out ranks my experience then.

When I got my gun license, out of the 10 of us sitting the written test, only 2 of us passed.  The other 8 failed.

The other guy and I moved out onto the range for the practical portion and 30 minutes later the rest came out to join us.

They were shown there they went wrong with their answers and then allowed to take the same exam again.

Like you story it has nothing to do with ATC training, but I thought I'd share it anyway, like you did.

Yep and this sort of thing doesn’t happen with ATC training. It’s ALL competency based, meaning your theory and practical assessments are graded and if you fail at any stage, you are let go and now permitted to continue your training. It’s basically too sad, so sad, bye bye. You need to pass each stage of training in order to progress. You don’t get the answers and then allowed to resist the test.

And yet, they managed to find the fire exits, just like you said.

Full marks, leftards. Year 9 maths, innit.

Don't take this personally OK

James H. Fallon, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Anatomy & Neurobiology and Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of California gave a speech to a NATCA audience about the brain of an air traffic controller and entertainingly how controllers are similar to psychopaths.

Air Traffic Controllers are selected because they can maintain composure under pressure, have an analytical mind with good problem solving skills and can do quick calculations on things such as distance and speed in their mind. They are confident decision makers, but above all, they are human and humans do make mistakes. It is for that reason we have redundancy in the aviation sector. If one system fails, another kicks in. That's how it's supposed to happen. If an ATC misses something, such as two aircraft getting too close to each other, the backup system (in this case TCAS) kicks in and tells the pilots of those planes what to do without any input needed from ATC. Clearly, something went badly wrong in Washington DC. My guess is that the US Army helicopter pilot will be found to be at fault and I think the request from ATC to the Blackhawk pilot to confirm they had the CRJ in sight was too ambiguous and possibly lead to the pilot misidentifying the aircraft, causing the collision. I think also, the Blackhawk needed another crew chief for an extra set of eyes. As with all incidents in aviation, it's usually a combination of factors that leads to a fatal incident, not any one thing.

When they go low, he goes high, Greggery.

Don't say that to Don Jnr, dear.

DL's got him back on his ADHD meds, so he should be good for now.
