Labor throwing more money away
Feb 7th, 2025 at 10:28am

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made a landmark funding announcement in the Northern Territory, promising $842 million in funding for the territory over six years.

He announced the cash injection at a press conference in Alice Springs this morning, saying the investment will be focused on closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

"This is a great day for the territory, and it's particularly a great day for remote communities," he said.

The federal government's $842 million cash injection will strengthen service delivery in remote First Nations communities, from policing to women's safety, health and education services.

It will also help fund Indigenous organisations in the NT and will shore up more than 500 jobs in the territory.

"The task before us is to build a future in which all Australians have access to the same opportunities," Albanese added.

"My government remains determined to seek better results for Indigenous Australians and help Close the Gap."

Albanese was joined by Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, who called the funding "one of the best health funding deals we've ever had for the territory".

She confirmed that a "big portion" of the funding will go towards "making sure that our remote communities are invested in".

The announcement came on the heels of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's claims that the Albanese government had not done enough to address crime in the NT.

Dutton also visited Alice Springs last week to announce the Coalition's plans to tackle crime and other key issues ahead of the 2025 federal election.

"The crime crisis in Alice Springs has captured the nation's attention," Nine's federal politics reporter Liz Daniels told Today on Friday morning.

"A promised crackdown on it was a huge part of the Liberal party's win in last year's Northern Territory election, and it will be the number one issue in the territory when we go to the polls at a federal level."

First of all, why has it taken Airbus Albo three years to come up with this funding? Also, why is it over six years? This is just a blatant attempt at bribing the people of the Northern Territory - if you re-elect my government, I'll give you this money but only if you re-elect me for two consecutive terms because that's how far the funding is spread over.

Secondly, I'm not sure that throwing almost one billion dollars at the Northern Territory, including to Indigenous organisations that have a history of corruption and misuse of government funds, is going to fix anything. No other segment of the Australian population has had more money allocated to it at local, state or federal level than aboriginal people. This isn't opinion - it's fact and you can look it up. Billions upon billions have been spent by governments from both sides of the aisle and from all levels of government. The same problems remain - chronic unemployment, chronic crime and imprisonment rates, chronic levels of welfare. Billions wasted with little if anything to show for it.

Until a government starts going back to basics, aboriginal quality of life will not change. There needs to be programs that keep kids in school, that help them get jobs and that foster a safe home environment free of drug and alcohol problems/violence and better access to services that we take for granted on the east coast. Until the basics are properly taken care of, nothing will change and no amount of money will change that.

**face palms**   more 'closing the gap' money that will do nothing........ how about closing the crime gaps and the violence gaps and the school attendance gaps and the woman killing gaps and the child abuse and neglect gaps.... AS YOU SAID BEFORE LAST ELECTION WOULD HAVE TO BE MET BEFORE ANY VOICE WOULD BE CONSIDERED?

Some of us have long memories..... living in this backward country you need to learn to develop that.... there's one hell of a lot of work to be done to undo the harm done in the past fifty years or so.

Where will this $842m go?  It won't go into education programs to stop youth rampaging... it won't go into equal law enforcement ... it can't go into 'jobs' because jobs are limited until the Grand National Railway from Townsville to The Pilbara (a Grappler Initiative) goes through and there are maintenance jobs etc... and the Alice Springs Nuclear Power Plant goes in with Homer Simpson at the helm.... providing unlimited power 24/7 to the Outback .....  they'd need huge reservoirs first for cooling though... what a GAIA concept there is right there.... maybe open Lake Eyre to the ocean and have plenty onboard for Inner Australia's Outback... stuff the sulphur crested pine tree frog or whatever lives only on Lake Eyre.... they'll find a home somewhere - it's nature... what did they all do when the volcanoes ruled the earth and it was hot as Galigbudgerang out there?  What do these species do when the floods come?  Sit there and drown in hyper salty water as it rises?

given that this funding is merely replacing existing funding put in place by the libs, was that funding a bribe by the libs the time that was originally announced?

I’d rather hear about money going towards health than rugby league clubs in PNG.

It’s a challenge to improve our indigenous brothers and sisters health outcomes and I don’t think just throwing money at it is the complete answer?

“ Due to the enormity of issues facing Indigenous Australians, many of the efforts implemented as part of Closing the Gap for the past 10 years may not have been trauma-informed for a range of reasons, including inconsistent political leadership, insufficient resources and mistrust of Indigenous communities towards ...

Closing the Gap Retrospective Review”

Just funding it isn’t the answer. It’s a proven failure.
I feel we aren’t actually listening to what the people need.
The government just does what works for everyone else and doesn’t stop to look at the fact it’s not working for the indigenous populations.

It’s much easier to give away someone else’s $$ in a media release than
to actually care.
