Calls To Drastically Boost Rent Assistance

Australia 'failing' most retirees who rent, researchers warn, amid rising homelessness risk   Sad
Two in three retirees who rent in the private market live in poverty and half of older renters have less than $25,000 in savings, according to a new report.

SBS News.

Key Points
The Grattan Institute says an increasing number of renting retirees are at risk of homelessness.
The federal government has increased rent assistance by 27 per cent in the previous two budgets.
Experts say further assistance is needed to protect renters.
Retiree renters are being left behind, putting a growing number of older Australians at risk of becoming homeless, a new report has found.

And the problem is only going to get worse, according to the Grattan Institute report.   Sad

Two in three retirees who rent in the private market live in poverty and half of older renters have less than $25,000 in savings.

For the poorest 40 per cent of 45-54 year-olds, home ownership has fallen from 68 per cent in 1981 to 54 per cent in 2021, and many older renters will not have enough in their savings to keep paying rent during retirement as the poorest 40 per cent of renting households between the ages of 55 and 64 have less than $40,000 in net financial wealth.

"Today's low-income renters are tomorrow's renting retirees," the Grattan Institute report said.

Tax-free: The super change that could save Aussie retirees thousands

The report's lead author Brendan Coates has urged the federal government to boost the maximum rate of Commonwealth Rent Assistance by 50 per cent for singles and 40 per cent for couples, and index the payments.

The federal government has already increased rent assistance by 27 per cent during the previous two budgets.

But under these changes a single retiree who relies on income support would only be able to rent four per cent of one-bedroom homes in Sydney, 13 per cent in Brisbane, and 14 per cent in Melbourne.

Increasing the maximum rate of rent assistance by $53 a week for singles and $40 a week for couples would provide retirees with enough to rent the cheapest 25 per cent of one-bedroom homes in the Australian capitals, the think tank found.

A new report has called for a big increase in rent assistance to help retirees who don't own a home.
Boosting rent assistance for all recipients would cost about $2 billion every year — and about $500 million of that would cover retirees.

But the report argues this could be covered by further tightening superannuation tax breaks, curbing negative gearing — which allows investors to claim deductions on losses — and halving the capital gains tax discount — which halves the amount of tax paid by Australians who sell assets that have been owned for 12 months or more.

"Australia is failing too many retirees who rent," Coates said.

"Only a further substantial boost to rent assistance can ensure that all Australians get the dignified retirement they deserve."

Sadly - all that will do is boost rents and profits for the parasites.

What is needed now is an total change of 'policy' away from mass immigration and the absurdity of shoe-horning people into this once comfortable nation like some third world slum, and then blaming those who are cast out for being cast out.  Next step is for the banks to be under proper control again, and to re-work their 'paradigm' that somehow lending to business ventures that rely TOTALLY on 'future equity enhancement' = sub-prime mortgaging ... leading to both the banks and the government striving mightily to PERPETUATE their current disaster visited upon the Australian people of mass immigration, skyrocketing costs of housing and construction and a shattered cost of living/income ratio - and to ensure that HOME OWNERSHIP becomes paramount in lending (prime mortgages) - AND that the money currently wasted as 'investment' in dead stock buildings should be re-directed to REAL infrastructure and development of Australia and for Australia first and foremost.

I find it impossible to believe that these people running the show are not simply blind and stupid - they are outright malicious and selfish, and frankly, psychopathic.

Albo doesn't care - he brought in millions of immigrants
and he'll bring in millions more -
even though there's no housing and rents have skyrocketed.

Yes. White knight won't admit that the ALP has irresponsibly flooded Australia with an over-populating crises through immigration of 3 million in just their term. It was pure unsustainable recklessness that has resulted in people already living here becoming homeless along with a building industry and sensible planning's not able to meet such a demand with the double whammy being prices for just rent, let alone ownership going through the roof.

Pure stupidity

Mass, uncontrolled immigration puts pressure on everything:

schools,
hospitals,
roads,
water,
electricity,
gas,
petrol,
airports,
railways,
2nd hand car prices,
food,
housing,
rentals,
& all Govt services.

We all pay for it.

if you are a retiree who doesnt own their own home you have  "messed up"

care factor  zero

if you are in your early 20's you deserve support because the system is now corruptly stacked against you

But if there were not millions more immigrants then State housing
would have enough spare places for people who didn't make it.

Well - let me just make this clear... I haven't 'messed up' - the women in my life have - so I suppose I bear some responsibility for choosing them.  The Eld Gel didn't 'mess up' - she was a widow in her forties and raised three kids - both of us have owned our own homes and even built one together and renovated three... each time gaining a profit margin that was rapidly over-run by costs of materials and of living and alternative homing..... all such things due to piss poor management at the top of Antipodia ... and all built around greed and brown paper bags... when we started building a dream home - we calculated that one pension was for living and the other for building - within two years that was no longer viable due to cost rises in everything - cost rises that have never slowed down and which incomes have never kept up with.

Tell me now how a young person working part-time casual is going to own a home of their own other than by inheritance.... I'm all ears.... not everyone can be in the top earnings brackets - if they were there'd BE no brackets.... and a fluid economy relies on income disparities - as I've been trying to explain to dividie for years in regard to costs of living here and in the Third World.  Money is like the tides - it flows to where things are low and builds up a reserve ... then flows back... goods and services do the same.... what any trading nation must do is ensure that there is disparity in its favour - or the flows will cease, as we see occurring in the world today where most 'advanced' nations are living in perpetual borderline Depression due to piss poor trading paradigms and failures of internal paradigms of prosperity for their own people first.

When Australia decided its best way forward was neo-feudalism and a huge pool of desperate impoverished workers begging for a crust at the castle gates, it essentially destroyed itself and all in it by stupidly equalising itself with the lowest in the world.... and now this is made worse by bringing in people in millions from those countries, all of them filled with a thirst for revenge against the Great White Man's Civilisation (see the foreword to Blossoms In The Wind, and that very fine description of what lead Japan to WW II and to Kamikaze) and a rapacious appetite for everything this silly country can offer them in the way of handouts, tax concession handouts, and so forth.

Meanwhile down at the farm the good ol' Aussie works his fingers to the bone, thinking that honest toil will bring its just rewards, and then goes to the bank for a loan for a home to secure his family in life, and is told he can't have it because no job is secure nowadays unless you are a parasite and unless your business is being a 'business plan' to buy houses that are not homes...

So technically I don't own my home - I have a mortgage.... but my children own a future ..... bought with the two homes I've owned ..... but that's another story... a Man's Story - not the story of some feeble, parasitic wimps whining about their disadvantage!!  Once Upon A Time In Australia.... that is the title at this time.
