A US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet has been “lost” at sea after it fell overboard from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier while it was being towed on board, the Navy said in a statement on Monday.

A US official said that initial reports from the scene indicated that the Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard. The Houthi rebel group claimed on Monday to have launched a drone and missile attack on the aircraft carrier, which is in the Red Sea as part of the US military’s major anti-Houthi operation.

All personnel are accounted for, and one sailor sustained a minor injury.

“The F/A-18E was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft.
The aircraft and tow tractor were lost overboard,” the statement said. “Sailors towing the aircraft took immediate action to move clear of the aircraft before it fell overboard. An investigation is underway.”

A second US official told CNN that the aircraft had sunk. An individual F/A-18 fighter jet costs more than $60 million, according to the Navy.

The Truman Carrier Strike Group is currently deployed in the Middle East and was in the Red Sea at the time of the incident. The Navy emphasized on Monday that the strike group and its air wing “remain fully mission capable.”

The Truman has repeatedly been targeted in attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. It made headlines in February when it collided with a merchant ship near Egypt; no injuries were reported. Another F/A-18 from the Truman was also “mistakenly fired” upon and shot down by the USS Gettysburg in the Red Sea in December ; both pilots ejected safely.

The Truman is one of two US Navy aircraft carriers that are launching aircraft for daily strikes against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. The US military began an intense bombing campaign against the rebels on March 15 and has struck hundreds of targets in the weeks since.

Earlier on Monday, the Houthis said they launched missiles and drones at the Truman and the warships in its strike group, claiming that the attack forced the carrier to turn around. Business Insider could not immediately verify these details.

A defense official told BI that "very few details can be provided currently as the incident is under investigation," adding that the crew is safe and accounted for.

The loss of a Super Hornet this week marks the second time during its involvement in the Red Sea conflict that the Truman strike group has lost one of the air wing's F/A-18.

In late December, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg accidentally shot a Super Hornet down in what the military described as "an apparent case of friendly fire."

Aircraft look insecure on a carrier's deck at the best of times. 'The Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire'. Moving under towing adds to the insecurity with the heavy weight having momentum.  - 10 to 20 tons.

Fighter jet slips off carrier hangar deck in Red Sea, one minor injury

Fighter jets are routinely towed around the hangar deck to park them where they are needed for any flight operations or other work. It is unclear whether there will be an effort to recover the jet, which costs about $60 million. The incident is under investigation.

The Truman has been deployed to the Middle East for months and recently has been involved in stepped-up military operations against the Yemen-based Houthi rebels. U.S. Central Command has said that the military has conducted daily strikes, which have been done by fighter jets, bombers, ships and drones.

The Truman’s deployment has already been extended once by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth by about a month.

These things happen... so the poor Houthis are not engaging in war - they're just the victims here, right?

Usually it's the girlies who cut in front of a semi at a stop. Here the truck knocked off the tractor and trailer.

Guilty. I failed to observe asset security on the flight deck when I chucked a wheelie to avoid a missile.  Also, drove truck onto girlie  rear wheels, sorry about that.

Yes I can read your thoughts before you post. Yes I'm not me. And I'm guilty. Why aren't you posting cartoons?
