Legendary Australian comedian Barry Humphries - best known for his role as Dame Edna Everage - has gone into an 'unresponsive state' in hospital.

Humphries, 89, was found unresponsive at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital on Thursday night, ABC Radio Sydney reported.

It comes after the comic's morphine levels were increased due to the pain he is experiencing.

'Barry has been in an increasingly perilous state of health,' said entertainment commentator Peter Ford.

Would be great to see him recover, but it still doesn't look good.

Never liked the person. Never found it funny. Thought it was pretty sad. Must admit, Humphries greatest acting moment was as the grotesque Goblin King (The Hobbit) as it gave us a good look of what's underneath the charade of all Transvestites.

A testament to Humphries' talent is the respect shown to him by Peter Cook - an alpha comic who would have excoriated a lesser talent.
