Welcome to the 2024 Covid Olympics

No one could have foreseen this.  Roll Eyes

#BREAKING: Covid is now running rampant through the Australian women’s water polo team with a fifth confirmed positive case within the Stingers as officials scramble to contain the illness to just one squad.

I'm sure it won't be long before Covid is "running rampant" through the entire Games. Should be interesting to see how they deal with this (that is, try to pretend everything is "normal").

But, I don't see what all the fuss is about? Isn't SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) supposed to be "just a cold" now?

And... just for aquascoot...

Entire (paywalled) Herald Sun article here:

https://x.com/BigBadDenis/status/1816020000869867776

Anna Meares: "I need to emphasise that we are treating Covid no differently to other bugs like the flu".

Good luck with that.

Perhaps Anna hasn't noticed how well that's working out for the whole of Australia (and the rest of the world) right now?

Huh? What are you going on about now?

Anyway...

2024 Paris Olympics hit by early COVID cases, but organizers don't seem worried by risk of major outbreak

Quote:
Paris — Thousands of athletes and spectators from around the world have descended on Paris for the looming 2024 Summer Olympics. They've brought with them the potential for a COVID-19 outbreak to spread within the tightly confined Games atmosphere.

Officials expect Paris to receive as many as 15 million visitors, including 2 million tourists from abroad, during the Games.

It's all about the money, as usual.

Quote:
There have already been positive tests at some of the Olympic training sites. In the most recent cases, national team chief Anna Meares confirmed Wednesday that five of Australia's women's water polo players had tested positive for COVID-19.

"There is training this afternoon and, again, if those five athletes are feeling well enough to train, they will, and they are following all the protocols that we have," Meares said at a news conference in Paris. "I can confirm that the whole of the water polo team has been tested as well."

Meares said the infected polo players had started wearing face masks and were isolating from other team members when not actively training.

"They're not going into the high-volume areas of the allotment, like the gym and the performance pantry, and more broadly, we have our respiratory illnesses protocol in place," she said.

lol... good luck with that, Anna. You're going to need it.

I wonder - will all athletes and spectators be wearing masks at the Opening Ceremony tomorrow? I'd like to see that. (Fat chance).

Quote:
Face masks are not required inside the Olympic Village, but hand sanitizer is available in its clinics and restaurants.

Yep, good old hand sanitizer... that'll work for sure.  Roll Eyes

Seems to be a lot of concern all of a sudden about something that is supposed to be just a "mild respiratory virus" according to people like aquascoot.

Surely this "mild respiratory virus" wouldn't have any effect on all of these fit, young athletes from around the world, would it?

Of course, if gallons of hand sanitiser isn't enough to stop a major Covid outbreak at the Games then I sure hope they've UV sanitised the handrails of all the escalators and travelators in Paris like this one here at Belmont Forum.

That'll solve the problem.  Roll Eyes

Oh, dear...

We are Volunteers for Paris 2024 and we resign due to the lack of Covid-19 measures

Quote:
We have been enthusiastic in the preparation of the Games as international volunteers. However, we are more and more worried at the lack of any actions from the organizers to address the epidemic of Covid-19 that is still going on across Europe and the world.

Quote:
We wholeheartedly wish to take part to the Games, and in order to so so, expect strong and immediate action from Paris 2024, to secure the competiton : performing tests, reducing the influx of visitors, encourage the participants to get booster-vaccines, install air purifiers, implement ventilation, impose compulsory FFP2 masks… Preventiv actions exist and have been validated by the scientific community.
Paris 2024 must enforce them in the Olympic and Paralympic villages, in the stadiums and arenas, in the public transit, and in all the iconic sites of the city showcased for this long awaited celebration of sports, peace, and friendship among peoples.

We call for the responsibility of Paris 2024 and its partners and sponsors, to take quick and resolute action to tackle seriously the threat of mass-contamination. W urge Paris 2024 to ensure the protection of its employees and volunteers, of the athletes and their teams, and of the public and the inhabitants.

Otherwise, this is an open-call for all the volunteers, athletes and officials, participants, and all the sponsors involved, to take your own responsibilities, and cancel your participation to Paris 2024 Olymipic and Paralympic Games.

But... but... it's MILD. Really it is.

COVID-19 hits Paris Olympics: Athletes forced to withdraw and mask up

Train hard, eat healthy, sleep well and … don’t wash your hands after using the bathroom?

American triathlete Seth Rider is preparing for the heightened E. coli levels in the Seine River with some unconventional — but, apparently, science-backed — methods.

“We know that there’s going to be some E. coli exposure, so I just try to increase my E. coli threshold by exposing myself to a bit of E. coli in your day-to-day life,” he said.

“And it’s actually backed by science. Proven methods. Just little things throughout your day, like not washing your hands after you go to the bathroom.”

Still going well...

Is there a COVID outbreak at the Olympics? At least 10 athletes test positive in one week

At least ten athletes, including British swimmer Adam Peaty and Australian swimmer Lani Pallister, have tested positive for COVID-19. What safety protocols are at the Olympics?

Quote:
At least 10 athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics — including swimmers from multiple countries and five Australian water polo players — have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last week. The uptick in cases has raised questions around the measures in place to stop the spread of COVID at the Olympics.

This year's Games are considered the first post-pandemic Olympics. Unlike the postponed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, there are no strict protocols or restrictions around COVID-19 in Paris.

However, COVID-19 is still spreading around the world. The United States is facing a summer wave, and the virus is also spreading in Europe, including in the Olympic Village.

I'm sure they did... I've read somewhere that apparently there's a big supply of Paxlovid at the Olympics and they're "handing it out like candy" to infected *edit: and uninfected (so far), I've also read* athletes.

And this is happening while ordinary Australians have to meet strict eligibility criteria to get Paxlovid and Lagevrio antivirals.

Disgraceful stuff (as aquascoot likes to say quite often).

Not bad for something that was touted as the "Post COVID Olympics".  Roll Eyes

COVID spreads among Australian Olympic team

AAP

Aug 5, 2024, 05:33 PM

Quote:
More than 40 Australian Olympians have tested positive to COVID and other respiratory illnesses at the Paris Games.

Swimming Australia's head coach Rohan Taylor has revealed some swimmers raced with COVID during their nine-day program at the pool.

While some swimmers withdrew from races including Lani Pallister and Ella Ramsay, others competed with the virus.

Zac Stubblety-Cook, silver medallist in the men's 200m breatstsroke, was among those who continued to compete despite testing positive to COVID.

And that's just Australia. Covid must be absolutely rife there at the moment. Sad to think that some of these athletes may never be able to compete again due to their upcoming Long Covid.

Let's hope Anthony Albanese is at the airport for photo op number 1,642,954 when the athletes return so they can (hopefully) give him infection number 3 (as far as we know) but I'm sure he will (unlike the majority of the Australian population) have antivirals available immediately, same as the Olympic athletes have had in Paris.

You never know - with any luck Anika Wells (useless Minister for Sport and Aged Care) and Mark Butler (useless Minister for "Health") might be at the airport too for a photo op and a (another?) free Covid infection when the athletes return.

But, I'm sure it will be "mild" for them.

It will be interesting to see if the athletes are wearing masks on the plane and at the airport when they return like most of them were when they left for Paris - not that it did them much good after they got there.

A few people are speculating on X that the Olympic organizers are probably not too happy with Australia at the moment for drawing attention to the fact that Covid is running rampant through what was advertised as the "post Covid Olympics".

I agree.

And I also agree when some of them said that the recent Tour de France should have been a big clue as to what would happen with the Olympics but money was obviously more important.

As usual.
