Title: PICTURES & AVATARS
Post by sagepowder(Guest) on Jan 12th, 2007 at 3:49pm
Anyone know how I can put a picture next to my name?

Thanks

UPDATE: see also this thread: http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1385880171

You need to sign up for an account. At the moment you are posting as a guest - you are not logged in. You should see a button that says register under the ozpolitic banner, or there is another link further up. Or just follow this link:

http://ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?action=register

Once you have done that it should be obvious. If not, just ask again and tell us where you are up to.

I've tried to post a picture - one of my own and pasted the URL into the space provided - but it hasn't worked.

Is that the way a "different" picture is posted beside your name?  If so I'll try again.

Title: Re: picture
Post by freediver on Jan 16th, 2007 at 4:13pm
Yep, that's how. Unfortunately there is no 'upload' option. You have to enter a URL to one that is already online. For those without a picture already online (you need one that is viewable by all members of the public), you can either inlcude it as an attachment to a post and get the URL by right clicking on the picture once it is uploaded, or you can email it to me and I will upload it for you. If you are really keen you can get a custom home page - see the members section. That is where I get mine from. Please shrink or trim the image to 65x65 pixels os smaller before uploading, as I suspect it may chew up bandwidth otherwise - checking that now.

Post by freediver on Jan 18th, 2007 at 2:20pm
OK, after a lot of messing around, we have an option to upload avatars directly. Could you please give this a try and let me know how it works? There is a file size limit of 5kb and you can only upload jpg or gif files. Please reduce the file to 65x65 pixels or less, which should work out to around 2kb. You can do this in microsoft paint by adjusting the borders directly or via image -> attributes, or you can shrink it via image -> stretch/skew. You can load larger images, up to 5kb, but they will get shrunk to 65 pixels anyway. As I understand it, if you have a larger image then people on slow connections have to wait for the larger image to download and then it gets shrunk. Also, I think that the avatars get downloaded again every time a new forum page is loaded, so it isn't just a one-off thing. This is also true for avatar images stored externally.

If you want a large photo of yourself available, set up a custome home page: http://www.ozpolitic.com/members

I didn't want a photo of myself - just a picture to put beside my name.  It's all too complicated.  I'll ask for some help at home in the next couple of days.

My computer skills only extend so far, but thanks anyway - keep the notes there so I can get help to follow them shortly.

Title: How to post pics--
Post by DonaldTrump on Feb 20th, 2007 at 2:02am
This is in response to the Aussie flags thread.

I've noticed some people are computer illiterate and are having trouble posting their Aussie flag suggestions... so I'm taking the liberty to explain how.

Step 1:
First off save the pic of your choice to your computer.

Step 2:
Second, go to this website: http://www.imageshack.us/

Step 3:
Third, click the 'choose' option. Click your pic of choice and click 'ok.' Once you do this, a file name should appear on the left hand side of the 'choose' button. Now, click 'host it.'

Step 4:
A list of links should appear on your screen. Highlight one of them and copy it.

Step 5:
Go back to the your post and paste the link wherever you please.

Step 6:
Highlight the link in your post and click the 'insert image' square which is situated above the smilies and sitting just above the 'underline' option. These symbols: [img]  should appear on either side of your link.

So now your done, your image of the Australian flag should be visible when you click 'post.' Hope it helps.  8-)

-DT

PS. I'm well aware that this is in the wrong section, freediver, but can you leave it here for the next few days until the oz flag thread disappears?

Thanks DT - that will come in very handy.  I have saved it as my success when posting pictures isn't terrific.  It will  definitely be put to good use shortly.

That's alright mantra.

Btw, you might want to use that feature to add a pic in your profile. That is, of course, if you want one.

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by mantra on Feb 21st, 2007 at 7:32am
Yes I do want a pic.  I have made a couple of unsuccessful attempts prior to you posting that information.

But I will have another go today.     :-[

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by freediver on Feb 21st, 2007 at 9:47am
There should be an option in your profile to upload an avatar from your computer. View your profile, then click on modify, then go to options, then click on browse where it allows you to upload a picture. Make sure you tick the box above it. Also, the picture has to be 10kb or less. Let me know if you have trouble reducing the file size.

Title: Re: How to post pics--

I have tried to edit my profile in order to insert a picture.  The password allocated to me last time by Ozadmin won't work to get me into my profile.  Because I automatically get logged in  when I come to this site - there's nowhere I can go to "login"  and then go to "forgotten your password".

Why won't my password work - and how can I get a new one.  Thanks.

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by freediver on Feb 21st, 2007 at 11:31am
You should be able to click on the profile button up the top, under the OzPolitic logo:

It should take you here:

http://ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?action=viewprofile;username=mantra

There should be a 'modify' button to the right of your name there.

Have you tried posting a pic using the guidelines for this post? see if that works. If it does, you should be able to post a pic in your profile using the same method.

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by mantra on Feb 21st, 2007 at 4:31pm

When I get into my profile - it says edit profile.  But the password allocated to me doesn't work - so I can't get in and change it.

As I'm automatically signed in - the LOG IN doesn't appear - hence no access to FORGOTTEN MY PASSWORD.

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by freediver on Feb 21st, 2007 at 4:38pm
So it does ask for your password? Try logging out via: , then login again. It will then give you an option to resend your password or something.

Copied mine from a right-wing forum me thinks.  :P

I think imageshack allows you to resize images to suit avater size.

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by freediver on Feb 22nd, 2007 at 11:03am
If you are linking to an image hosted somewhere else the 10kb limit doesn't apply. It doesn't apply to images attached to forum posts either. It only applies for images that are uploaded from your PC for your avatar.

To resize an image, save it on your pc and open it in Micro$oft paint. Save it as jpg or png or soemthing like that. If it still isn't under 10kb (note I increased the limit from 5kb to 10kb), then go to the menu: image -> stretch/skew and enter 50% (or whatever) in both horizontal and vertical under stretch (the top half, not skew in the bottom half). If you get really keen, see if you can get it to 65 x 65 pixels, by shrinking and cropping it. That way it will show up on the forum in exactly the same size as it does in paint.

If you can't figure this out, email me the image and I will set it up for you.

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by mantra on Feb 23rd, 2007 at 2:39pm
No - to both - Freediver and DT.  I thought a witch would be appropriate, as it's been inferred a few times lately that I am  ;).

Actually I was going to try out a few different symbols - tried that one first and when I went to change it - there was such a hassle, the password stopped working, couldn't get into my profile - so I just gave up.  I'm stuck with it for the time being, until I have the patience to try something else.

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by freediver on Feb 23rd, 2007 at 2:50pm
When you say the password stops working, do you click modify on your profile and then get a prompt like the one below, where you eneter your password but it doesn't work? Do you get an error message or does it just prompt you again?

I can think of three things to try:

1) Try hitting refresh and entering your password a few times.

2) Log out and log back in again.

3) Delete your cookies. You will have to log back in to every site you are joined up to if you do this.
confirm_password.jpg (7 KB | 79 )

Title: Re: How to post pics--
Post by mantra on Feb 23rd, 2007 at 2:56pm
When I put in my password - it says incorrect password - back.

But I'll try the refresh first.  I've tried logging in and out - that just sends me on a roundabout of user names and passwords - but if the refresh password doesn't work - I'll give deleting the cookies a go.

It doesn't matter that much - unless someone has objections to the symbol of a witch - I'll just leave it for a while.

I tried using the 'insert image' option when making a post, but it didn't work.

What am I doing wrong? Is it even possible to post pics?

Replace the curly brackets with square brackets.

Also, if it was your first post, it may have generated an error because I have banned people from posting links on their first post to cut back on spam. It may have thought of the image as a link.

One more time..

1- Place your cursor on the pic you want to copy from the net.

2-Right click your mouse

3-Scroll down to 'properties', and click

4-You will see a url come up

5-highlight the url

6-Come back into Ozpolitics

7-Above your post box you will see this

8-Click onto the little pic and  up will come" image  brackets", then paste address between the  brackets ,highlight url address between brackets  and then post., or you might like to do a preveiw refresh to see if it worked,( and it should have)- then post.

I can only access pics from the net with this method..not from 'my pictures OR any folders...this   link ceates a pathway directly the net .

Good luck.. ;)

I have increased the storage space for attached pictures, so you should be able to upload from your PC now, however I would prefer people to upload to the gallery instead or get images hosted on one of those photo hosting sites, especially if you are attaching pictures on a regular basis.

It looks like people are having lots of fun with pictures. However, if you use the 'attach' option each time, it stores a new copy in the database, which could start to slow this site down eventually.

If you are going to post the same picture repeatedly, please use the 'insert image' button. Right click on the image in the previous post, get the URL, and use the 'insert image' tool on the toolbar (third from left, above underline). Or, get it hosted elsewhere. I can set up a gallery for you if you want.

The fish you are holding freediver what kind is it?

I used to dive on the Barrier Reef..freediving as you saying, but kept to the shallows.

Sharks scared me..seen a few too..but mostly school sharks.

Not like out here..we are infested with Pointers.

On the reef we caught so many difefrent kinds of fish. Flowery cod, coral trout, barracuda, hammerdhead sharks, Dugong (in nets by aborigines, ) same for large sea turtles.

Is that a groper or a Cod?

If we just do the very odd "appropriate" picture relating to a comment - is that OK - if it's reduced not to take up a lot of space?

Title: Re: pictures
Post by freediver on Mar 7th, 2007 at 9:36am
Sure. The only thing that concerns me is using the 'attach' function repeatedly for the same picture. You don't have to use the new gallery to get around that, though it is probably the easiest way.

Once a picture is already online somewhere, you can add it using the 'insert image' tool.

This gives you some code, which looks like: {img}{/img}, but with square brackets instead of curly brackets. Right click on the image you want and copy the URL, then paste it in like this:

{img}http://ozpolitic.com/forum/Templates/Forum/default/img.gif{/img}

For hosting images online, you can either attach them to a post and then go back to that post later for the URL when you want to use it again, you can put it in the gallery, which will give everyone easy access, you can get it added to your profile page in the members section, or you can get it hosted on some other website - see the feedback board for more details.

I've added a header with the links to the rest of the site. Not sure if I can do much more with the 'theme'. I think the only other modification I can make is to add a footer.

Has anyone else besides AN tried uploading files?

I have just discovered a heap of 'themes' that give it a slightly different look and move the links around a bit. Maybe if you create your own login you can change it for yourself. If you want me to give them a go just ask, otherwise I will leave it so as not to confuse people.

Title: Inappropriate pictures....
Post by freediver on Mar 6th, 2007 at 9:27am
I have had some requests to remove inappropriate pictures from this forum. While pornography is not allowed here, there are some other pictures that contain nudity or racism in a strongly political context. I would like member's feedback on where to draw the line with these pictures as there is an unfortunate tradeoff between freedom of speech and maintaining a tolerable atmosphere here. Please speak up, even if you don't feel strongly one way or the other, as any rules that come out of this will affect you at some time. I don't want to run a poll on this, but if you don't want to make your views public you can PM me.

Of particular concern, the GWB and Osama 'make love not war' picture here:

The racist content in some of these posters:

I have already requested the removal of one picture (from another thread) showing the breasts of a (supposedly) Islamic woman. While it did contain a political message, it was generally lost doe to the pornographic nature of the image.

Pornography, yes, by all means remove it. If it offends someone on the grounds of cultural sensitivities or racism, let it remain.

i'm all for free speech and freedom of expression.

but, i think we need some maturity when posting, we're all adults here (i'm assuming), so we can still have a good debate without having to resort to attacking people based on ethnic or religious backgrounds.

this isn't the Stormfront forum, if u want to post racist pics, do it there, but not here.

Gavin, this is a P-O-L-I-T-I-C-S forum. People are bound to get offended sooner or later, even if you're not on stormfront.

No need to attack someone on an individual basis of course, but the actual issues of race, religion and culture should not be forbidden merely o n the grounds of political correctness alone. The bias of someones argument based on their personal background should also be brought into question. But personal attacks... solely personal attacks... for no good reason... should be forbidden.

I agree, we shouldn't attack people personally, but also we shouldn't be relying on ethnic/religious stereotypes either when discussing issues.

The bias of someones argument based on their personal background should also be brought into question.

Just because someone has a certain background does not mean they are going to be biased, and the fact that they have that background is not evidence of bias. If someone is biased, point out the bias based on what they post.
